Redbuds are flowering trees. In the early spring, before their leaves unfurl, they clothe their branches and trunks with clusters of 1/2" purplish pink blossoms. The eastern redbud grow from 3-4' to 10-15' in five to six years, eventually reaching a height of up to 35'. Redbuds begin to blossom when they are four or five years old. After their flowers fade, redbuds bear 2-4" greenish pink seed pods, which turn brown when they ripen and cling to the trees throughout most of the winter. The 3-5" glossy green leaves open late in spring and turn yellow before dropping in fall. The eastern redbud is hardy to Zone 4. Redbuds grow in full sun or light shade and do best in mist but well-drained soil that is deep enough for their long roots. Container grown redbuds should be planted in spring in areas where winters are cold and at any time from fall to spring in areas where winters are mild.
