Holly

'Burfordii' is considered a shrub at a height of 10' and a tree at heights of 20-25'. The leaves are glossy, dark green with a single terminal spine. Fruit is abundant and can occur without pollination. It is hardy in Zones 7-9. Dwarf Burford which is also called 'Burfordii Nana' reaches heights of 5-6' (occasionally 8'). The leaves are single spined and the fruit is dark red. It is hardy in Zones 7-9.

Ilex cassine is an excellent specimen or street tree. When left to grow naturally it creates a loose open canopy. Dahoon Holly grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist areas. Brilliant red berries in the fall and winter are an excellent source of food for wildlife.

'Eagleston' holly will grow best in acid, moist soil. It has dark green leaves and slowly matures into a pyramidal shape.

Ilex x attenuata ‘East Palatka’ is a natural hybrid discovered in 1927 near East Palatka, Florida. This excellent urban tree has fleshy red berries that attract wildlife. East Palatka Hollies are popular in landscapes because of their uniformity and excellent performance under harsh urban conditions.

Ilex x ‘Nellie R. Stevens’ is a hybrid between Ilex aquifolium and Ilex cornuta. It is a small tree with very dark green leaves and a very dense habit that makes an excellent specimen or screen plant. Nellie Stevens Holly is an extremely popular landscape plant that grows best on a well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade.

Savannah Holly is a beautifully shaped tree, with a narrow, open pyramidal to columnar form. A 35-foot-tall tree can be eight feet wide in 40 years,
indicating a moderate growth rate. The spiny, dull, dark green leaves have wavy margins and are accented in fall with heavy clusters of red berries which persist throughout the fall and winter. Male and female flowers appear on separate trees and must be located in the same neighborhood to ensure production of berries. Many nurserymen propagate from female
trees so most nursery trees have berries. Many trees are grown with a central trunk and skinny lateral branches, although some nurseries offer those with several upright trunks growing straight up through the crown. Many trees are sheared in the nursery to create more branches and a fuller canopy than will be seen several years after planting.
