Crape Myrtle is a large deciduous shrub or small tree. They range in color from white to red or lavender, depending on the variety. The small crinkled flowers appear in clusters up to 12" long. Crape Myrtles are a fast growing plant which may reach a height of 20' or more. Its trunks and branches are covered with smooth gray brown bark that flakes off to reveal pinkish new bark beneath. The leaves, 1-2 1/2" long are bronze when they unfold, becoming deep green as they mature. They turn yellow orange in autumn before falling. Crape Myrtle is hardy in Zones 7-10. They require full sun and a moist, well drained soil that is supplemented with peat moss or compost.
